In Tyrese’s New Video, Black Women Don’t Make the Cut–Especially with Dark Skin

After years of pursuing a career in acting, Tyrese Gibson has returned to the music scene and is preparing to release his new album “Open Invitation” later this fall. Gibson, who recently shot the “I Got a Chick” video which features R.Kelly and Tyga, has come under a barrage of criticism from Black women who are not very visible in the video. The majority of the women in the video are not Black, and of those who are, they arevery light in complexion.

Despite the Weak Economy, Black Hair is a Booming Business

In a time where it seems most businesses are on the decline, hair salons are on the rise. The Census Bureau recently noted their jump in an otherwise glum report about mom-and-pop businesses, stating that the number of hairdressers and barbers and the shops that employ them grew by about 8 percent from 2008 to 2009.

Do Black People Discriminate Against Dark Skin and Natural Hair?

I spent time watching a trailer for the film "Dark Girls," directed by Bill Duke and D. Channsin Berry.  Oddly enough, the clip was sent to me by a friend of mine who has spent her life being praised for being "light skinned-ed" and having the long, flowing hair of a black Marilyn Monroe.   She eventually married a tall, dark man, leading me to wonder if she feels any guilt for receiving preferential treatment over something that should never have mattered at all.

America’s Love of Natural Black Female Hair

Even with a growing number of Black women embracing their natural hair, there remains an immense fascination with it, this includes both other races and also some unfamiliar Blacks. It seems the ‘Puffy Hair Movement’ will take some getting used to.

For many who don’t know, the term “natural hair” for black women is defined as hair that is not processed and not chemically altered. Straightened hair is often viewed as easier to care for and more attractive, but for some, the dangers of a chemical straightener, like a relaxer, are too much.  So, instead, they opt to wear their hair in its natural state. Natural hair can be described as curly, kinky, wavy etc. the list goes on.
